We needed a strong, sturdy horse who can carry a full-sized rider without being too tall, intimidating and a personality of a teddy bear, and that fit Narani to a "T." He is extremely curious and a Houdini who can open gates and push down fences. This gentle Tennessee Walker mare came to us with a three-week-old filly by her side with only 60 days of training under her "saddle cinch." With her laid back personality and no vices, she was ready to be molded into the perfect therapy horse for us. They were yearlings when Beth picked them out of 300 frightened and wild donkeys. Ada and Irma were forced into a squeeze shoot, haltered, then were startled into the trailer with banging lids. They endured the three-hour ride back to the coast and were released into their pen.These sweet-tempered animals never offered to bite or kick throughout their handling or training. For their first feet trimming, they stood more quietly and patiently than any young horse, which made them quick friends with our farrier. They are so gentle and broke to saddle, they are used for therapy and are among the favorites of some of our special kids. That's how he got his name!   Jacob is a Suffolk sheep like Lucky and was rescued as a day old lamb. His mom couldn't feed him, so they had to bottle fed him. Suzanne, the ranch manager, found him at Sun Puddle ranch when she went out to look at a horse. She saw how friendly and trained Jacob was from the close contact with bottle feeding. Jacob's owner thought he would fit into the RAD program and benefit the special visitors so she donated him to the ranch. I've lived here at the ranch since 2000. I feel special because I was the first llama at the Rancho. Like my cousin the alpaca, I originate from South America and would have been used as a beast of burden and would have carried up to 60 lbs. as a pack animal. But here at the Rancho I don't have to worry about that. Homer is one of the main delights of the petting zoo as he makes his rounds taking treats and pets from our special visitors.
